The NAACP Image Awards Takes Progress to the Next Level for the New Millennium!
LOS ANGELES (Feb. 2, 2001) In the spirit of this year's 32nd NAACP Image Awards theme, "A Journey of Excellence," the NAACP celebrates its progress during the 20th century, and pays tribute to individuals that support positive change for African Americans through film, television, literature, recording, and corporations.
To take that journey to the next level for the 21st century, the NAACP's 2001 Image Awards has a new executive producer, multi-award winning producer/writer Suzanne de Passe, Chairman and CEO of de Passe Entertainment, and past president of Motown Productions. Suzanne de Passe brings many new and exciting additions to this year's millennium show. "While the Image Awards has the enormous task of recognizing outstanding achievement in television, film, music and literature, it is also an incredible opportunity to bring much-needed attention and recognition to artists that are making significant contributions to our culture and world. Our production team is excited about this challenge," said de Passe.
Some multiple nominations for this year's award ceremony for the television and motion picture categories include: "The Steve Harvey Show," "City of Angels," "Soul Food," "Love and Basketball," and "Remember the Titans." In the recording category, artists such as Jill Scott, Yolanda Adams, Wyclef Jean, and Toni Braxton have also been nominated.
While the networks have expressed a need to address the lack of diversity in television, NAACP President and CEO Kweisi Mfume says, "We still have a very long way to go. While some progress has occurred, much work still needs to be done to equal the playing field for qualified people of color both in front of and behind the camera. Without the chance to be recognized for their talent, Black writers, directors, actors and technicians are effectively denied the opportunity to affect the industry on a scale worthy of their ability. Our fight is to create the opportunities for African Americans and other groups to be able to green light projects that will create real and lasting diversity in television and film."
According to the Chairman of the NAACP Image Awards, Charles Whitehead, "The NAACP will continue to be at the forefront of this struggle. It is our journey as a people, and the NAACP's mission as an organization, to celebrate our culture and talent. When we do, the world sees that, they respect it and they will replicate it."
