San Jose' Rep's Inaugural Season Breaks Records

SAN JOSE, CA: -April 8, 1998 - San Jose Repertory Theatre's Managing Director Alexandra Urbanowski announced that the company's first season in the new theatre facility has surpassed expectations for attendance and revenue. "We have exceeded revenue goals for each of our first four productions this season. Our holiday show, Thunder Knocking on the Door: A Blusical Tale of Rhythm and the Blues earned over $388,000, running a close second to our biggest selling show of all time, The 1940's Radio Hour. Season subscriptions have reached a total of 12,556, which is the highest number in our 18- year history."

Urbanowski continues, "We expect to retire our accumulated deficit by August, 1998, which ends our 1997-98 fiscal year. This will conclude our five year deficit reduction plan."

Board President Tom Denver states, "This season has encompassed a number of major goals for San Jose Rep including the completion and opening of a state-of-the-art theatre facility. We have also enjoyed major financial and artistic successes. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I'd like to acknowledge the broad support from the community that contributed greatly toward these achievements."

In addition to box office success, the company received artistic acclaim. Thunder Knocking on the Door received nine Bay Area Drama-Logue Awards, including two awarded to Rep Artistic Director Timothy Near for Outstanding Production and Direction. Nixon's Nixon also received two Drama-Logue Awards.

The Rep will conclude its inaugural season in the new theatre with the world premiere of tragicomedy Icarus (April 19 - May 15) and the musical COLE which runs from May 31 - June 28, 1998.
