California Unemployment Rate Tops 12 percent

EXODUS Online - A new record has been set in California due to it's high unemployment rate. The Employment Development Department (EDD) estimates the number of people out of work increased by 49,000 in the month of August. The total number unemployed is now estimated at over 2 million.

In July 2009, EDD announced the state's unemployment rate at 11.9 percent. Last year the state's August unemployment rate was 7.6 percent. Only one industry, 'educational and health services' posted employment gains with 14,200 more jobs over the year.

Imperial County, which has a large Hispanic population, top the state at 28.7 percent. Marin County has the lowest unemployment rate at 8.3 percent.

The United States Department of Labor's, Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on September 4, 2009 the national unemployment at 9.7 percent. The African American national rate of unemployment was 15.1 percent. Last month the reported rate of unemployment for African American's was at 14.5 percent.

The State of Michigan currently is the leader in unemployment at 15.2 percent. Nevada's reported unemployment rate is 13.2 percent.
