SACRAMENTO - In this Democratic weekly address, Assembly Speaker Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles) and Assemblymember Anna Caballero (D-Salinas), highlight the recent visit of Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar to California and his announcement of $260 million in federal economic stimulus funds that will “boost California’s water supply while protecting fish habitat, improve dams and other infrastructure as well as mitigate the impacts of drought.” The legislators see the announcement as another good sign that the Obama Administration understands the importance of investing in California.

Hello, this is Assembly Speaker Karen Bass.

This week I was pleased to join Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar on his first official visit to California when he announced new federal stimulus funding for California water infrastructure.

As we work to turn California’s economy around, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signed by President Obama has targeted federal resources towards job creating projects and programs that our state needs.

Federal stimulus funds are getting transportation projects back on track and supporting hard-hit families with expanded health and unemployment insurance.

In his visit this week Secretary Salazar announced $260 million in federal stimulus that will boost California’s water supply while protecting fish habitat, improve dams and other infrastructure as well as mitigate the impacts of drought.

At the same time, bipartisan water working groups we created in the legislature are identifying further actions to deal with California’s ongoing drought and our state’s overall water safety and supply.

The legislature will also work closely with Secretary Salazar, the Governor and California’s congressional delegation on ways to protect and improve the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, -- a source of drinking water for 25 million Californians.

Secretary Salazar’s visit and the announcement of the stimulus funds for water projects is a good sign President Obama and his Administration understand the importance of investing in California.

This has been Assembly Speaker Karen Bass.
