Actor Idris Elba and Minnesota Viking Madieu Williams to be honored at a Washington DC Gala commemorating the independence of Sierra Leone

Washington, DC. April 23 - The producers of the Green White & Blue Gala, which commemorates the 48th anniversary of the independence of Sierra Leone, will award Actor Idris Elba for his work in television and film and Sierra Leone-born Minnesota Viking Madieu Williams for his philanthropic efforts this Saturday, April 25 beginning at 7pm. The famed and award-winning Elba’s father is from Sierra Leone.  Sierra Leone-born Madieu founded The Madieu Williams Foundation in 2005 which focuses on educating youth on health, wellness and nutrition. Madieu attended high school and college in Maryand and will be returning home to the area to receive his award. Set to take place at the pristine and immaculately maintained Historical Arts Society of Washington, the event will gather a broad section of international dignitaries, professionals, business leaders and other friends of the developing nation. The Washington, DC metropolitan area has the most residents of Sierra Leonean decent outside Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone activist Kadija Jalloh, who died in a fatal car accident during Sierra Leone visit last December as featured in a February 2009 Washington Post article explaining the tragedy, will also be honored posthumously for her work encouraging expatriates to return home and develop their poverty-stricken country.

The event will feature a VIP cocktail reception from 7:00 to 10:00 pm, highlighted by a fashion show and a presentation by the Coyaba Drum & Dance Troupe. Following the reception, the gala will kick off with dinner, dancing, feature guest djs, and performances by Sierra Leonean artists SK, Jr Kabba and Khady Black, until 3am. The Historical Arts Society is housed at City Museum of Washington, D.C. located in the Carnegie Library building, 801 K Street, N.W. at Mount Vernon Square. Proceeds from the event will benefit The Sierra Leone Fund, Inc., a national DC-based non-profit group that organizes projects to benefit the people of Sierra Leone.

The event is being produced by Abstracts Events Management which has been a premier event planning firm operating in Washington, DC Metropolitan area for over 10 years.  Abstracts has played a role in many high-profile events, including Presidential Inaugural celebrations, National Organizations' Galas, Awards Ceremonies, and weddings.
