SHIRLEY HAILSTOCK NAMED ONE OF THE CENTURY'S BEST
100 GREATEST ROMANCES OF THE 20th CENTURY

Shirley HailstockPlainsboro, NJ-Shirley Hailstock, best-selling, award-winning author of romantic suspense novels, has been included in the list of the 100 Greatest Romances of the 20th Century for her novel, Legacy. The list was compiled by the Florida Romance Writers, a chapter of Romance Writers of America, using several listservs, writers and readers links, Romantic Times Magazine, How to Write Romance (1990 edition), Romance Readers Handbooks (1989 edition), issue of the Romance Writers Report and Twentieth Century Romance and Gothic Writers by Gale Research Group.

"...her plots ... are over the edge of the world" quotes the New York Times in a 1998 interview. The novel Legacy has won numerous awards, including the Waldenbook Award for Bestselling Multicultural Romance, the Reader Favorite Award from Under the Covers and the Best Multicultural Award from Romancing the Web. In addition, Legacy along with two other novels by Shirley Hailstock, White Diamonds and Whispers of Love, were chosen by Glamour Magazine readers as novels that made them "Fall in Love Again."

Hailstock, whose first novel, Whispers of Love, was published in 1994 says she is "...thrilled to be in the company of romance legends like Sandra Brown, Kathleen Woodiwiss, Daphne DuMaurier, Georgette Heyer, Rosemary Rogers, Anne Mather, Nora Lofts and all the others."

Hailstock is currently crafting her next romantic suspense, due from BET Book in November, 2000. Olympic Gold, will be released just as the summer Olympics begin in Australia. The plot revolves around a former Olympic gymnastics champion and the CIA agent trying to save her life. Additionally, St. Martin's Press asked Hailstock to participate in an invitation only anthology called Island Magic. Along with three other African-American authors, her novella, An Estate of Marriage, will be released in March, 2000.

Hailstock is one of the inaugural authors in a line of African-American romantic fiction formerly published by world-wide publisher, Kensington Publishing in New York City. (The line of African-American romances was sold to (BET) Black Entertain ment Television in June, 1998.) Her previous novels, such as White Diamonds and Whispers of Love, have topped best seller lists and been the recipient of awards such as the HOLT Medallion and the Heart of the West Award. Romantic Times Magazine, a trade publication, awarded her their Career Achievement Award for 1997-1998 and she's been nominated for the Colorado Award of Excellence in Fiction Writing.

A speaker at many conferences and workshops, Hailstock is a Director on the Board of the Romance Writers of America, an 8,000 member organization of genre writers and a former officer of Women Writers of Color. Her initial wish upon graduating with a degree in Chemistry from Howard University in Washington, DC and obtaining her MBA in Marketing from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, NJ was to join the NASA team.

Living in Central New Jersey with her two teenage children, Shirley enjoys traveling, reading and tennis. She works full-time for a pharmaceutical company as the Senior Manager of the Sales Systems Department. She has also been an adjunct professor of Accounting at Rutgers University, an adjunct professor of Novel Writing at Middlesex County College. She continues to give seminars and lectures on the subject.
