Citywide Dialogues Set from Reseda to San Pedro to Discuss Devin Brown Shooting February 26, 2005

LOS ANGELES, CA - In an effort to promote deeper civic engagement in the face of crisis in the City of Los Angeles surrounding of the shooting death of 13-year old Devin Brown, the ‘Days of Dialogue’ organization, chaired by Assemblyman Mark Ridley-Thomas (D-Los Angeles) is collaborating with the Los Angeles Fire Department, the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Dispute Resolution Program to hold another successful citywide ‘Day of Dialogue’ at local area fire houses across the city on Saturday, February 26, 2005.

“Tensions in our community are building, and it’s time to deal with it head on” said Ridley-Thomas. “As this is an issue that affects the entire city, Chief Bamattre, Chief Bratton, City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo and I felt that we needed to give both citizens in the community and city public safety personnel an opportunity to meet face to face, on equal footing, to share their respective views on this crisis facing the city.”

Community organizations across the city will come together to make the ‘Day of Dialogue’ a productive and meaningful day of exchange of different viewpoints and serve as a community involvement tool to for all participants.

“Days of Dialogue brings various groups together and gives them the opportunity to create an understanding of each other," said Connie Watson, Executive Director, People Who Care Youth Center. “Recognition and reinforcement of contributions to the community and other positive actions is the heart of the ‘DOD,” who will host in the South Los Angeles area.

“The mission of the ‘Day of Dialogue’ is to advocate for social change by providing community interaction and education. DOD works as a vehicle for the community and allows people to sit down with law enforcement and vice versa to discuss concerns and issues on a unique and different level,” said Eunsook Lee, Executive Director of the National Korean American Service and Educations Consortium, who will host in the Koreatown area.

"The ‘Day of Dialogue’ gives people the opportunity to provide stability to their neighborhoods and set up channels where the message can be sent effectively from the community to the local law enforcement,” said Angela Sanbrano, Director of the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN) in Los Angeles, who will host in the Pico Union area.

Each dialogue will take place from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon. The dialogues will feature a community welcome from the local host and sponsors, and opportunities for concerned citizens to speak directly with LAPD officers. The dialogues will be facilitated by trained mediators from the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Dispute Resolution Program.
