San José Public Library Announces 6th Annual Community Volunteer Awards
(San José, CA) --- Candy Magana (16)-a dedicated and exemplary youth volunteer at San José Public Library's Educational Park Branch-received city council recognition as one of the City's departmental "Volunteers-of-the-Year." "Her nomination form described personal leadership, and a clear commitment to service within the library," says Library Volunteer Coordinator Kermit Jones. "We also took into consideration that she has demonstrated the ability to lead and train other volunteers at such a young age."
Volunteers, serving at locations throughout the San José Public Library System, were honored at a special reception at the San Jose Hilton held earlier this spring. Over 200 people, including library staff, family and friends, gathered to celebrate the diverse contributions of more than 400 volunteers, representing 20,000 hours of community service. City Librarian Jane Light joined Councilperson Charlotte Powers in thanking the volunteers, saying, " Each volunteer gives us their time, but perhaps even more importantly, their ideas and caring. The extraordinary number of volunteers that we have working at the Library, in effect, doubles the pool of staff talent available to serve the residents of San Jose." The Awards
The Esther Crosby Library Spirit Award-Awarded to the volunteer displaying
a keen interest in and extraordinary commitment in support of the San

Esther Crosby, an extraordinary volunteer of more than twenty years. Mrs.
Crosby passed away in March of 1998. As a volunteer and one who loved
books and knowledge, she devoted herself to a leadership role in the Friends
of San José Public Library, Inc., a non-profit, community-based
support group. Mrs. Crosby was an advocate and ardent proponent of library
services. She volunteered time on an almost daily basis, preparing books
for the Best Friends Bookstore and general library used book sales. Her
spirit was and is a source of inspiration and encouragement.
The Carol Lane Act of Kindness Award-Implemented in memory of Carol Lane, who served as a library employee until her retirement in 1996. Mrs. Lane then became very active as a library volunteer. She became the president of the Friends of the Rosegarden Library, and served in that capacity until her death in March of 1998. She brought to her career and volunteer assignments an exceptional spirit of kindness. The memory of this characteristic is memorialized by this award and continues to motivate those who knew her.
Branch Team Award-Awarded in recognition of branches that have made an extra commitment to utilize volunteer services and whose volunteers have responded by providing greater service hours. This award is given to the volunteers at the branch who provided the highest average hours of service per volunteer-based on per capita hours of service per volunteer-over the past year.
